In 1927 Francesco Calabria left southern Italy for Australia; three generations later his family still makes the wine. This Shiraz comes from old vines in the Barossa Valley and rests a year in American oak: ripe, generous and warm.

José Luis Gómez and Laura Muñoz met in a bar in Tokyo and founded Casa Rojo in 2010; their labels look like film posters. Tintafina is their Ribera del Duero: Tempranillo from old vines at up to 900 metres, aged in French oak. Powerful, with elegant tannins.

Jean Engelbrecht of Rust en Vrede, once a pilot, named this wine after the high wispy clouds. His Pinot Noir grows at around 1,000 metres on the Ceres Plateau, among apple orchards with snow on the horizon, and rests fourteen months in large used French barrels.

La Rioja Alta was founded in Haro in 1890 and still makes its own barrels from American oak. The 904 marks the merger with the Ardanza winery in 1904. A Gran Reserva that spends four years in barrel and still tastes remarkably fresh.

Winemaker Etienne Louw, a trained musician, is Orpheus with his lyre; designer Brenden Schwartz is the Raven and draws the labels by hand. No. 7 stands for their first seven vineyards, a tribute to Pinotage: South Africa's own grape, crossed from Pinot Noir and Cinsaut in 1925.

The estate at the foot of the Helderberg dates from 1694, and in 1993 Nelson Mandela chose its wine for the Nobel Peace Prize dinner in Oslo. The Estate is its flagship: Cabernet, Syrah and Merlot from its own vineyards, aged in French oak.

Susana Balbo – Brioso
Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot · Agrelo, Mendoza (Argentina)
In 1981 Susana Balbo became the first woman in Argentina to graduate as a winemaker. Brioso, her word for a spirited love of challenge, is her Bordeaux-style blend from vineyards at almost 1,000 metres, aged in French oak.
